Frequently Asked Questions – Wire EDM Services

What is Wire EDM and how does it work?

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is a non-contact machining process that uses a thin, electrically charged wire to cut through electrically conductive materials. The wire never touches the part—instead, it uses spark erosion to precisely remove material, making it ideal for complex shapes and tight tolerances.

What materials can you cut with Wire EDM?

Wire EDM works on any electrically conductive material, including:

  • Tool steels (A2, D2, S7, etc.)

  • Stainless steel

  • Titanium

  • Carbide

  • Aluminum

  • Copper alloys

  • Inconel and other exotic metals

What are the typical tolerances achievable with Wire EDM?

We can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.0002", depending on the material and part geometry. Surface finishes can also be customized based on your requirements.

Is there any part distortion or stress introduced during EDM machining?

No. Since Wire EDM is a non-contact, thermal process, there is no mechanical stress or deformation introduced to the part—making it ideal for delicate or high-precision components.

What kinds of parts are best suited for Wire EDM?

Wire EDM is ideal for:

  • Intricate prototypes

  • Precision die and mold components

  • Gears, splines, and keyways

  • Tight-tolerance or hard-to-machine features

What information do I need to provide to request a quote?

To provide an accurate quote, we typically need:

  • A 2D drawing and/or 3D CAD file (PDF, STEP, IGES, etc.)

  • Material type (if known or provided)

  • Tolerance or finish requirements

  • Quantity needed

  • Required lead time or delivery date

If you're not sure where to start, don’t worry—our engineers are here to help. Whether you need assistance creating a drawing or figuring out the best approach for your project, we're happy to guide you through the process. Just contact us, and we’ll take it from there.

Can you work with customer-supplied material?

Yes, we’re happy to work with either customer-supplied material or source material on your behalf, depending on what works best for your project.

Do you offer additional machining services beyond Wire EDM?

Yes! In addition to Wire EDM, we offer CNC Milling, grinding, and laser marking.

How do I get started?

You can contact us via phone, email, or through our Contact page to discuss your project. To submit drawings, please email them directly to sales@texasedm.com. Once we receive your files and project details, we’ll review everything, confirm any necessary information, and provide you with a detailed quote.
